Overview

This design and ensuing reserved matters application were completed in 2019, following the clients successful outline application for a large residential development. The S106 requirements for the housing development required: A Neighbourhood Equipment Area for Play, Primary School, Health Centre and Commercial premises to be developed to support the new housing provisions.

Our Challenge

The site was located within close proximity of a grade two listed building and gardens, with the wider area being a conservation area, consequently the Council and Developer had produced a design guide for the entire scheme which the proposals would need to interpret and respond to. In addition to the visual design challenges the site also housed an existing electrical sub-station, and severe contour fluctuations in one corner.

Our Solution

Our proposals provided a contemporary interpretation of the design guide that would respond well to the existing locale and the new housing development, creating a harmony between the scheme and its existing locale. To achieve this synchronisation considerable research was undertaken on the existing architectural materiality and vernacular, with complimentary material palettes tested alongside these findings – our designs reflected the traditional timber frame buildings by emphasising vertical and horizontal members.
