A large distribution centre development for a national retailer that provides ambient and temperature-controlled storage facilities, in addition to the warehousing the site also houses a regional office that supports the stores network in this area.
There were planning restrictions on the height and visual impact of the development, given its relative proximity to a local residential area, this had to be balanced with the client’s technical requirements for the building and designed accordingly. One specific requirement from the client was a temperature-controlled area with a range between +2 to -20 degrees.
We worked closely with the project engineers to strategically cut and fill parts of the site to lower the building height, allowing the client’s needs to be met while satisfying the imposed planning restrictions.
The temperature requirement was resolved by designing the building fabric as a cold store construction using specialist, highly insulated cold store panels – replacing the need for an inner and outer skin build up, maximising the usable floorspace footprint.
