A large distribution centre forming part of a national retailer’s logistic network completed in 2019. The scheme provides ambient and temperature-controlled storage facilities, alongside a regional office that supports the stores network in this area.
The photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of the building were able to provide approx. 2000kw, enabling the site at times to operate solely powered by green energy.
The site was a former gravel pit used for the extraction of minerals, sands and gravels. By 1973, the pits were restored to agricultural land use by infilling the pits with Pulverised Fuel Ash, (PFA). This was done by pumping a slurry mix of approx. 30% PFA to 70% water into the pits. This was allowed to dry out over two years before a top dressing of topsoil was added.
To mitigate the adverse ground conditions, in excess of 6,500 piles were required across the site, supporting the building foundations. These were designed and calculated to ensure there was nominal settlement of the structure to maintain a high tolerance in the floor slab flatness required for the high bay racking installation.
